UT

When: January 8-March 31

Where: In your residence hall

Why: Spring 2005 is designated as the Environmental Semester.  Show your green by helping save natural resources, reduceing costs for the university, and winning cool prizes!

Top Ten Ways to Reduce Environmental Impact

10.  Lights out: Turn off the lights when you leave a room!  And flip the switch if you see lights left on in

unoccupied classrooms, study areas, etc…

9.  Give it a rest: Switch off computers/monitors at night. Turning off your computer actually reduces heat

stress and wear on your system while saving energy

8.  Recycle: With the UT Recycles, UT Cares program you can recycle plastic containers, all types of

paper, aluminum cans, rechargeable batteries, ink cartridges, and more!

7.  Use Reusable Beverage Containers: Keep a reusable mug or water bottle with you. Your beverage

will hold its temperature longer and you’ll be less likely to spill.

6.  Be Water Wise: Report leaky faucets to your front desk and make sure that you always turn faucets

completely off.

5. Watch the time (11am-6pm): Avoid using electricity during peak demand periods.

4.  Carpool: Save fuel by carpooling with friends to the mall or grocery store.

3.  Ride the T: Going downtown—or anywhere else?  KAT provides free or cheap public

transportation (http://www.ci.knoxville.tn.us/kat/).

2.  Close the Loop: Buy recycled material!  Look at the label before you make your next purchase,

especially with paper products.

1.  Participate: Participate in the Make Orange Green challenge and reduce amount of resources you

use in your hall.
